General Conference 2016

General Conference is a meeting that happens every four years in the United Methodist Church, and it is the only body that speaks and makes official decisions for the denomination that extends to all areas of the UniteGCLOGOd States and across a large portion of the rest of the world.  It is composed of a group of clergy and lay delegates from all over who will be coming together in Portland, Oregon to make some very important decisions that will have a direct impact on our denomination for years to come.

If you’d like to learn more about General Conference or see a list of clergy and lay delegates from the Western NC Annual Conference, you can check out the General Conference page on our annual conference’s webpage by clicking on the link here.  Please be in prayer for those who will be participating in General Conference in the coming weeks.

An Act of Love Viewing

an act of loveYou’re invited to a special viewing of the documentary An Act of Love which will be held at Asheville Pizza and Brewing (675 Merrimon Ave.) on Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 pm.  A time of discussion will follow after the movie.  Below is an excerpt from an email sent out by our District Office:

As you know General Conference is fast approaching and there will be many topics discussed and votes cast. In an attempt to prepare for General Conference through continuing Healthy Conversations the Blue Ridge District is going to provide a free screening opportunity to watch the documentary “An Act of Love.”

Created by two up and coming documentarians Scott Sheppard and Kate S. Logan and produced by Pauley Perrette the film takes a look at the story of Frank Schaefer. Frank, a former United Methodist pastor, was defrocked after presiding over the marriage ceremony for his son and his son’s partner.  The film interviews folks from many theological backgrounds and shares thoughts from Good News and the Reconciling Ministries Network.

We are showing the movie on April 21st at 7:00 PM at Asheville Pizza and Brewing at 675 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC 28804. After the showing, we will have a time of discussion.

It is our hope that this screening will be a time to further dialogue. We know that not everyone agrees on each theological point but we also recognize that we need to talk and work together to be the church God is calling us to become.

Grace and peace,

Journey with us to 3 continents this Sunday after worship!

Following our 11:00 am worship service this Sunday, April 10th, there will be a special time of sharing where three of our members will be sharing stories, photos, and experiences of their recent trips abroad.

Please bring finger foods to share as we hear from 3 different areas of the world: Ghana, Israel, and Italy…all without the hassle of traveling by air or sea!
